Get the New GMail 2.0!
February 15, 2008 — Giannella
This post is for UK (and other non-US) users of Gmail.
I knew GMail 2.0 existed, but I could not enable it. Initially I thought it was my laptop’s problem so I went off trying to upgrade my browser change the Language settings to “English” and none worked
It had passed me by a few months ago until someone accessed his GMail from my Laptop — and there it was — version 2.0.
Why it’s like so:
The problem is that outside US no-one has it! Our US friends got an upgrade but we didn’t. (Not suprising).
Anyway, last week I discovered that we can enjoy the delights of Gmail 2.0 too!
Solution:
a. If you Have IE: Ensure you have version 7 or later
If you have Firefox: Ensure you have 2.0 or later.
b. Log into GMail –> go to ‘Settings’ (top-right) –> Change your display language to ‘US’.
Save changes -> Reload your Browser.
Checking that you have the latest version:
a. It’s simple. On the top right you should be able to see an ‘Older version’ link. If so, congrats, you have updated to Gmail 2.0.
What’s new?
Only a few defaults but there’s much more to them:
- New views
- Better sorting and searching
- Better filtering as well as a new look.
- You can run Greasemonkey scripts in your Firefox browser which will allow you to customise Gmail in a kazillion ways (including an integration of Google Reader and Calendar for example).
- “Remember The Milk ” lets you integrate a task list into Gmail, Calendar and iGoogle (as well as other non-Google apps).
In short, just make that little change, pretend you are from the US and get the upgrade
It was worth it in the end.
